This is one of the last archaeological sites to be discovered in the Yucatan Peninsula, and perhaps one of the most important Mayan ruins ever found. It is located just two hours away from El Cuyo.
At Ek Balam, meaning «dwelling place of the black jaguar», you can explore the archaeological site and climb the pyramids. You then get to cool off at cenote X’canché (just two kilometers from the ruins). This semi-open cenote has a reflecting pool of water which can be reached by descending a flight of steps or, for the more adventurous types, by rappelling.
